PV Sindhu Exits Malaysia Open After Straight-Games Loss to Wang Zhiyi

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu’s promising run at the Malaysia Open Super 1000 came to an end on Saturday, as she exited the tournament at the semi-final stage in Kuala Lumpur. Playing her first competition since returning from a foot injury, Sindhu showed glimpses of her best form but eventually fell to world No. 2 Wang Zhiyi of China in straight games, 16-21, 15-21, in a closely contested 52-minute clash.

The Indian shuttler was competitive throughout the encounter, engaging in several long rallies and pushing her higher-ranked opponent. Sindhu especially looked in control during the second game, opening up a 11-6 lead at the mid-game interval. However, a series of unforced errors allowed Wang to claw her way back, turning the momentum and sealing the match in her favour.

Reflecting on the contest, Sindhu admitted that maintaining composure at crucial moments made the difference. She acknowledged missing the opportunity to extend her lead in the second game and noted that such fine margins often decide matches at the highest level. Despite the loss, the former world champion described the match as a valuable learning experience against top-quality opposition.

The Malaysia Open marked Sindhu’s return to competitive action after a foot injury sustained in October, and the performance has given her renewed confidence heading into the season.

She is now set to continue her comeback at the India Open in New Delhi, starting January 13, where she will look to build on the momentum and sharpen her match fitness. Sindhu emphasized the importance of recovery and consistency as she aims to carry forward the confidence gained from a strong start to the year.
