The United Arab Emirates women’s cricket team achieved a significant milestone in history by playing their very first WODI (Women’s One Day International) match against Zimbabwe Women in Bulawayo. The match is part of a four-match WODI series, followed by two T20 matches. The match was more significant as it signified the UAE women’s official entry into the ODI format. Early in May 2025, they had been granted WODI status by the International Cricket Council (ICC), and the team made the most of their opportunity by clinching a memorable 36-run victory, a moment that will be remembered in UAE cricket history.

UAE won the toss and elected to bat first and set a respectable total of 222 for five wickets in their 50 overs. The innings was opened by captain Esha Oza and Lavanya Keny. The Captain was dismissed for a mere 10 runs. However, opener Lavanya Keny stabilised the innings with a determined 47 runs off 82 balls, showcasing remarkable patience. The standout moment came when Rinitha Rajith and Michelle Botha put together an impressive, unbeaten 102-run partnership. Rajith ended on 59 not out in 59 balls, while Botha contributed 42 runs in 44 balls, guiding the team to a solid finish in their inaugural ODI.
Zimbabwe’s bowling unit demonstrated a disciplined approach but had trouble making regular breakthroughs. Adel Zimunu and Tendai Makusha finished with one wicket each. The highlight for Zimbabwe was Loreen Tshuma, who impressed with her figures of (2/18) in six overs, effectively applying pressure during the middle overs. Nyasha Gwanzura also made a valuable contribution with a wicket, giving away just 19 runs in her five overs. Despite their efforts, the resilience of the UAE’s middle and lower order helped them finish strong, leaving Zimbabwe’s bowlers with relatively little reward for their hard work.
Zimbabwe Women sought to disrupt the UAE’s debut, but they faced a well-executed bowling attack. Esha Oza made a strong comeback with the ball, taking three wickets. She recorded the bowling figures (3/25) in 10 overs to win the Player of the Match award. Shashikala Athige Silva also made a mark with three wickets, putting pressure on Zimbabwe’s batting order. Young star Samaira Dharnidharka made a mark with a thrilling double strike, claiming two wickets in consecutive balls. She took three wickets by conceding 29 runs in 7.3 overs. Zimbabwe was bowled out for 186 in just 46.3 overs. Bowling efforts from the UAE sealed a remarkable victory for the UAE Women by 36 runs in their first outing.
This win was about much more than just numbers; it carried a powerful message. The UAE Women’s team has been making strides in T20Is over the years, earning respect on the international stage with consistent performances. Their success in the shorter format played a crucial role in achieving ODI status, paving the way for their confident debut in the 50-over format. The team’s ability to adapt their skills so effectively in their first attempt reflects the potential of this emerging squad.
Captain Esha Oza described the experience as “surreal,” recalling how seeing “ODI” next to UAE on the fixture list gave her goosebumps. For the players, coaches, and fans at home, this victory symbolised years of hard work and dedication. Former UAE international and current coach Ahmed Raza praised the team’s resilience, expressing that this victory is only the first step on their journey toward greater ambitions.
UAE Women have three more ODIs and two T20Is against Zimbabwe, providing crucial experience as they adapt to the 50-over format. Their historic debut not only brings global recognition but also paves the way for participation in larger tournaments. While they have found success in T20Is, their first ODI win against Zimbabwe marks a new chapter, showcasing their growth and ambitions. Fans can anticipate more historic moments in the future as the team continues to evolve.
