South African captain Laura Wolvaardt has been crowned ICC Women’s Player of the Month for April 2026, her third such honour in just seven months, including October 2025 and December 2025, signalling the Proteas skipper’s unstoppable form ahead of the expanded 10th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup from June 12 to July 5 in England and Wales.

Wolvaardt edged out stellar competition from Sri Lanka’s Imesha Dulani and Brazil’s Laura Cardoso to claim the award, capping a dominant month that saw her dismantle top attacks, the White Ferns and the Indian unit across formats. This triumph underscores her evolution into one of women’s cricket’s most reliable anchors.
“It feels incredible to win a third ICC Player of the Month award in such a short span of time, and I hope to continue batting with the same confidence and consistency,” Wolvaardt said, her words radiating the quiet fire that has defined her leadership.
The Proteas skipper wasted no time, amassing 138 runs across two ODIs against New Zealand at an average of 69.00. She then unleashed havoc in the T20I series against India, plundering 330 runs in five matches at an average of 82.50 and a blistering strike rate of 168.36, including a century and three fifties.
Her series-defining masterclass arrived in the third T20I: an explosive 115 off just 53 balls, adorned with 14 fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 216.98, powering South Africa to a nine-wicket demolition while chasing 192. That knock, her third T20I ton, not only sealed a 4-1 series triumph but echoed the heartbreak of their 32-run final loss to New Zealand in the 9th edition of the T20 World Cup in Dubai on October 20, 2024.
“What makes this award even more special is that these performances came against the reigning World Cup and T20 World Cup champions, which is something I truly cherish,” Wolvaardt added, tipping her hat to the quality of opposition. “This has been one of the most enjoyable phases of my career, and it’s especially satisfying to have achieved success across formats. I’m grateful to my team-mates for their constant support, and I hope to carry this form into the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup next month in England and Wales.”
With the tournament now expanded to 12 teams, up from 10 in 2024, South Africa sits in Group 1 alongside India, Australia, Bangladesh, the Netherlands, and Pakistan. Wolvaardt’s charges kick off against Australia, led by Sophie Molineux, in the third match on June 13 at Old Trafford, Manchester, from 7 PM IST. After tasting runners-up silverware last time, this red-hot streak positions the Proteas for a redemption run.
