23-year-old shot putter Krishna Jayasankar has made records at the Mountain West Indoor Championships 2026. On Sunday, March 1, the Indian shot putter made a best throw of 17.09m in the shot put event breaking the indoor National Record of 17m mark. She ended with a silver medal in the event. Meanwhile, with 17.69m Makayla Long won the gold medal and Erin Brown claimed the bronze with her 15.34m throw.

In the final, Krishna made a throw of 16.30m in her first attempt but fouled in her next two attempts. She made her comeback in the fourth and attempt by scoring two 16-plus throws, 16.27m and 16.64m respectively. In her final throw, she broke the record by scoring beyond 17m with her best throw of 17.09m.
Krishna’s podium finish at the Indoor Championship has given her the qualification for the American Inter-University NCAA Indoor Championships. The tournament will be held from March 14 to 15 in Virginia Beach.
After the record-breaking performance, Krishna has improved her own national record of 16.83m by 0.26m which she scored during the 2026 Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque held in February. Her attempt is considered among the best by a female shot putter in 2025. However, the outdoor national record of 18.41m is currently being held by Abha Khatua.
This is the fourth time that Krishna has improved her national record while competing in the indoor women’s shot put events. After the Don Kirby event, she made a throw of 16.63m at the New Mexico Open 2026 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She held her previous best record of 16.03m scored last year.
Krishna is the second daughter of former basketball internationals Prasanna and Asia All-Star Jayasankar Menon in Chennai who has been training in Jamaica and the NCAA in Texas.
