The Miami Open delivered one of its biggest shocks this season as Magda Linette produced a stunning comeback to knock out compatriot Iga Swiatek in the second round.

After being dominated in the opening set, Linette turned the match on its head to secure a remarkable 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over the reigning Wimbledon champion, marking one of the most significant wins of her career.
Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion and winner of this tournament in 2022, appeared in complete control early on. She raced through the first set, dictating rallies with authority, but the momentum began to shift as Linette adjusted her approach and found greater consistency on serve.
The turning point came late in the second set when Swiatek faltered under pressure, producing a double fault that handed Linette crucial break points. The lower-ranked Pole capitalized, forcing a decider with a confident return winner. “I just had to go for a little bit more,” Linette said. “I had to start hitting a little bit faster, too, to push her a little bit more back, not give her space. But I think it all started with serving a bit better,” she added.
In the third set, Linette maintained her aggressive intent while Swiatek struggled to regain rhythm. Despite showing resilience by saving multiple match points, Swiatek couldn’t hold off her opponent indefinitely, eventually sending a backhand wide to seal her exit.
“It just was a bad match for me … unconsciously, or consciously, it’s hard for me to say. I need to work to get back from that, because I haven’t felt things like that for like five years,” Swiatek would say after the game. I’ll just get back to work, try to get something positive out of the practices and try to figure it out.”
The defeat marked Swiatek’s first opening-round loss at a tournament since the WTA Finals in 2021 and continues a string of underwhelming results this season following earlier exits at the Australian Open, Doha, and Indian Wells.
Linette now advances to face Alexandra Eala, who battled past Laura Siegemund in three sets. The young Filipino continues her impressive rise, having previously stunned Swiatek at this very tournament last year.
Elsewhere, former world number one Venus Williams exited in the opening round after a straight-sets defeat to Francesca Jones, who now moves on to face Jessica Pegula.
In the men’s draw, teenage sensation Joao Fonseca impressed with a three-set win over Fabian Marozsan, setting up a blockbuster clash with world number one Carlos Alcaraz.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Moise Kouame made history by becoming the youngest player to win an ATP Masters 1000 match since Rafael Nadal in 2003.
