India’s challenge at the Malaysia Masters Super 500 tournament came to a close on Friday after shuttler Ashmita Chaliha suffered a hard fought defeat in the women’s singles quarterfinals in Kuala Lumpur. Despite showing flashes of brilliance and taking control during crucial phases of the contest, the Indian shuttler could not maintain her momentum against Denmark’s experienced Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt, who stormed back to secure a 21-23, 21-18, 21-11 victory in a match lasting just over an hour.

The defeat ended a promising campaign for Ashmita, who had emerged as one of India’s standout performers at the tournament. Ranked world No. 71, the Assamese shuttler entered the quarterfinal clash as the underdog against world No. 23 and eighth seed Line Kjaersfeldt. However, Ashmita displayed confidence from the opening rallies and pushed the higher ranked Dane to the limit in the first two games before fading in the decider.
The opening game witnessed an intense battle between the two players. Ashmita started strongly and established an early 11-6 advantage at the mid game interval through precise placements and aggressive shot making. Her attacking intent forced errors from Line, who initially struggled to find rhythm against the Indian’s pace and court coverage. Although the Dane gradually reduced the deficit and came close at 19-18, Ashmita held her composure during the closing stages and eventually edged the game 23-21 after a tense exchange of points.
The second game followed a similar pattern, with Ashmita once again racing to an early lead. The Indian looked sharp in the front court and moved confidently across the court despite returning recently from an injury layoff. At one stage, she led 10-5 and appeared to be in control of the contest. However, the experienced Danish shuttler began to turn the momentum in her favour with improved defence and longer rallies.
Line levelled the score at 13-all and from there used her experience to dictate the pace of the game. Ashmita tried to stay in contention with aggressive winners down the line, but the Dane remained calm under pressure and closed out the second game 21-18 to force a deciding game.
The final game saw a complete shift in momentum as Line dominated proceedings from the start. Ashmita struggled physically and found it difficult to sustain the intensity she had shown earlier in the match. The Danish player capitalised on the situation by increasing the tempo and targeting the Indian with deep returns and sharp smashes. As the errors began to creep into Ashmita’s game, Line pulled away comfortably before sealing the decider 21-11.
Ashmita Chaliha’s run at Malaysia Masters 2026 comes to an end as she goes down against Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt in the women’s singles quarterfinals. Despite the loss, Ashmita’s performance in Kuala Lumpur has been widely appreciated, especially considering her return from injury. Earlier in the tournament, she registered an impressive straight game victory over Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei, the former junior world champion, winning 21-13, 21-16. The win had highlighted her growing confidence and ability to compete against established international opponents.
Ashmita also became the last Indian remaining in the competition after several top Indian shuttlers made early exits from the tournament. Her run to the quarterfinals offered a positive sign for Indian badminton, particularly in women’s singles where younger players are gradually stepping up on the international circuit. For Line Kjaersfeldt, the victory continued her strong run at the tournament. Before defeating Ashmita, the Danish player had already eliminated two Indians, Anmol Kharb and Malvika Bansod, in the earlier rounds. Her consistency and experience proved decisive once again as she booked her place in the semifinals.
While India’s campaign ended without a title contender in the final stages, Ashmita’s fighting display against a higher ranked opponent will give her confidence moving forward in the season. The 25 year old has shown resilience in her comeback journey and her performance at the Malaysia Masters could prove to be an important stepping stone as she aims to climb the world rankings and establish herself among the top names in international badminton.
