Arunachal Pradesh’s rising combat sports star Sonam Zomba once again underlined her dominance on the Indian MMA circuit with a composed and clinical title defence at Matrix Fight Night 18, held on May 2 in Greater Noida.

Competing in the main event of Matrix Fight Night 18 at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Indoor Sports Complex, Zomba successfully retained her women’s strawweight world title with a submission victory over Brazil’s experienced challenger Maristela Alves. The bout marked her first defence since capturing the vacant championship at MFN 17 and was widely regarded as one of the toughest tests of her career. The contest began with Alves using her striking ability and physical reach to put early pressure on the Indian fighter. Zomba, known for her grappling strength, showed patience in the opening exchanges, choosing not to engage recklessly. Instead, she focused on defensive movement and waited for opportunities to close the distance.
As the fight progressed, the 27-year-old from Tawang gradually settled into her rhythm. She absorbed minimal damage while working to neutralize Alves’ striking advantage. Her strategy of controlled aggression and tactical awareness allowed her to shift the momentum, particularly as the bout moved into deeper rounds.
The decisive moment came when Zomba executed a well-timed takedown, bringing the fight to the mat where she is most effective. From a dominant position, she transitioned smoothly and locked in a tight armbar. Alves, unable to escape the hold, was forced to submit, handing Zomba a decisive victory and confirming her status as one of India’s leading female MMA athletes.
With this win, Zomba extended her impressive professional record and continued an unbeaten streak that has defined her comeback phase in recent years. Her journey has not been without setbacks. Earlier in her career, she battled a serious elbow injury and endured a lengthy layoff, making her current run even more remarkable.
Training out of Bidang MMA & Fitness Gym in Guwahati, Zomba has steadily evolved into a complete fighter. Her ability to adapt mid-fight, particularly against opponents with contrasting styles, has become a defining trait. Against Alves, she once again showcased that versatility by shifting from defensive caution to offensive control at the right moment.
Beyond the result, the victory carries broader significance for Indian MMA, especially for athletes from the Northeast. Zomba dedicated her win to Arunachal Pradesh and highlighted the importance of representation for young athletes, particularly women looking to pursue combat sports as a career. Her achievement drew praise from political leaders, including Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who lauded her performance and described it as a moment of pride for the state. “What an inspiring performance by Sonam Zomba in defending her MFN Strawweight World Title at Matrix Fight Night 18.
“With determination, discipline, and grace, she has once again made history, becoming a proud symbol of excellence from Arunachal Pradesh and a true inspiration for young athletes across India and beyond,” Khandu added.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein also congratulated Zomba, praising her resilience and contribution to the state’s growing sporting identity. As Matrix Fight Night continues to expand as India’s premier MMA promotion, Zomba’s rise reflects the increasing depth and quality of talent emerging from the country. Her consistent performances and ability to deliver under pressure position her as a key figure in the future of Indian MMA.
With momentum firmly on her side, Zomba now looks ahead to new challenges, carrying not just a championship belt but also the expectations of a region that sees her as a trailblazer in combat sports.
