Lucy Hamilton and Chloe Ainsworth Earn First Australia Contract as 2026-27 List Revealed

Cricket Australia have unveiled their women’s national contract list for the 2026-27 season, signalling both continuity and fresh opportunity as the team builds toward another packed international calendar. With the next ICC event looming and several bilateral series scheduled, the selection reflects a careful balance between established match-winners and emerging talent pushing through the domestic ranks.

As per the existing Memorandum of Understanding between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association, the board is permitted to contract between 15 and 18 players. This year, an 18-player list has been finalised, ensuring depth across formats while rewarding consistent performances.

The headline inclusions come in the pace department, where young fast bowlers Chloe Ainsworth and Lucy Hamilton have earned their maiden national contracts. Both players have impressed in domestic competitions with their ability to generate pace and control, marking them as prospects for the future of Australia’s bowling attack.

Their selection underlines the system’s ability to identify and promote rising talent at the right time. All-rounder Nicola Carey has also retained her place after receiving an upgrade during Australia’s recent tour of the West Indies. Her performances across formats have reinforced her value to the squad, particularly as a reliable contributor with both bat and ball.

However, the new list also sees some notable omissions. Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy, who has retired, is no longer part of the contracted group, marking the end of a significant chapter in Australian women’s cricket. Meanwhile, Tayla Vlaeminck and Tess Flintoff have not been renewed for this cycle, though both remain firmly in the selectors’ plans for the future.

Cricket Australia’s Head of Performance (Women’s Cricket) and National Selector, Shawn Flegler, emphasised the importance of recognising emerging talent while maintaining stability within the squad.

“It’s exciting to see Lucy Hamilton and Chloe Ainsworth earn their first national contracts, which is a testament to the impact and talent they’ve shown at domestic level, while Nicola Carey retains her recent upgrade after some strong performances over the last two series. While Tayla and Tess aren’t on the list this year, we’ll continue to support their development and they are both very much still in contention for selection.”

Australia head into the new cycle with strong momentum. Their recent tour of the West Indies saw them dominate proceedings, completing clean sweeps in both the ODI and T20I series. One of the standout performers was Georgia Voll, who stepped up impressively at the top of the order in the absence of Healy. Scoring 148 runs in three T20Is, Voll not only filled a crucial role but also climbed to the top of the ICC Women’s T20I Batting Rankings, an achievement that highlights her rapid rise on the international stage.

Looking ahead, Australia face a demanding schedule that will test their squad depth and adaptability. The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England remains the marquee event, with the team aiming to extend their legacy as six-time champions. In addition, home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, along with away tours to Sri Lanka and South Africa, will provide ample opportunities for players to stake their claim.

“With a major ICC event and several key series coming up, we’re confident this group has the skill and depth to perform, while also creating opportunities for others to push into the squad across the year,” Flegler added.

The team, currently led by Sophie Molineux, has been placed in Group 1 for the upcoming World Cup alongside India, South Africa, Pakistan, the Netherlands, and Bangladesh. With a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging stars, Australia appear well-equipped to maintain their dominance on the global stage.

As the new contract cycle begins, the focus will not only be on results but also on building a sustainable pipeline of talent, ensuring that Australia remains a powerhouse in women’s cricket for years to come.
