Salima Tete was born in Badkichapar village in Simdega district, Jharkhand, a region widely known as a nursery of Indian hockey. She grew up in a farming family where both her parents worked in agriculture, and her father also played hockey at the local level.
Inspired by the sport around her village, Salima began playing hockey at a very young age. Her talent quickly became evident, and she joined a local hockey training centre before progressing to state-level competitions. Her rapid development made her one of the most promising young players from Jharkhand. Salima rose through India’s junior hockey system and quickly established herself as a leader.
In 2018, she captained the Indian team at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, where India won a silver medal in the Hockey5s format. Her leadership and energetic playing style made her one of the standout performers of the tournament. She also represented India in the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup 2021, where the Indian team finished fourth, narrowly missing out on a medal.
Tete made her senior debut for India in 2017 against Belarus and soon became an important part of the national team’s midfield. She was selected in the Indian squad for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 (held in 2021), where India achieved a historic fourth-place finish, the best-ever Olympic performance for the Indian women’s hockey team.
She has represented India in several major international tournaments, including: Tokyo Olympics 2020 – 4th place, Asian Games 2018 (Jakarta) – Silver Medal, Asian Games 2022 (Hangzhou) – Bronze Medal, Asia Cup 2022 (Muscat) – Bronze Medal, Commonwealth Games 2022 (Birmingham) – Bronze Medal, Asian Champions Trophy 2023 (Ranchi) – Gold Medal, FIH Nations Cup 2022 (Spain) – Gold Medal
On 2 May 2023, Salima Tete was appointed captain of the Indian women’s hockey team, becoming one of the youngest players to lead the national side. Her leadership was highlighted during the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy in Ranchi, where India won the gold medal on home soil.
