Sunelita Toppo is an emerging Indian women’s field hockey player who represents the Indian national team as a forward. She was born in Kukuda village in Sundergarh district of Odisha, a region widely recognized for producing many talented hockey players in India. Growing up in a village where hockey is deeply rooted in the culture, Sunelita developed an interest in the sport at a very young age.

She began playing hockey at the age of eight using bamboo sticks due to limited resources in her village. Despite these challenges, her dedication and natural talent helped her improve quickly. Sunelita trained at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centre in Sundergarh, which has produced several prominent Indian hockey players. She was also inspired by her aunt, Anupa Barla, who represented India in the Junior World Cup, motivating her to pursue the sport seriously.

Sunelita first gained national attention after representing Odisha in the 2022 National Games held in Gujarat, where her impressive performance caught the attention of national selectors. She made her debut for the Indian junior team in February 2023 during a four-match tour of South Africa. Later that year, she was part of the Indian junior team that won the Junior Asia Cup 2023 in Japan, showcasing her attacking skills and speed on the field.

Her consistent performances earned her a place in the senior Indian women’s hockey team within a year. Sunelita made her senior international debut in February 2024 during the FIH Pro League match against China in Bhubaneswar. Initially playing as a midfielder, she later transitioned into the forward line, where her pace and goal-scoring ability became valuable for the team.
